TRAVEL
YOUR INSPIRATION TO EXPLORE THE WORLD
Abbey Alexander, Writer
There are some spas you’ll gladly travel for, and the Soho House Istanbul Cowshed Spa may just be on that list. Turkey is known for its hammams, where you get cleaner than clean. Cowshed takes it to the next level and envelops you in clouds of suds. You’ll barely know your name when they’re finished.
Overview
The Cowshed Spa is yet another creation of Soho House founder Nick Jones, a retreat within a retreat that spans Soho House locations across the world. And the Cowshed at Soho House Istanbul is not to be missed. A small but mighty space, the spa offers a wide variety of treatments from pedicures to facials to the ever-relaxing hammams. This is a spa that focuses on emulating an experience true to its location, which pays off in the details. Stop by the spa’s Neville Barber Shop for a Turkish-style trim, and you’ll see exactly what we mean.
Atmosphere
The spa at Soho House Istanbul packs a punch, inviting guests to experience fitness and relaxation at its finest. The atmosphere oozes coziness thanks to antique woods and retro accents, juxtaposed with serene marble in the steam rooms. And don’t let the gym’s chic facade fool you — it has everything a fitness lover could ever need, and then some. There’s even a charmingly retro boxing ring if you’re looking to take your workouts up a notch.
The Hammam Experience at Soho House Istanbul
There are baths, and then there are hammams. Also called Turkish Baths, hammams are steam-bath treatments that use hot water for an ultra-deep cleanse. The Soho House Istanbul Cowshed Spa has two of them. And in true Soho House fashion, the place takes the whole affair to the next level. The already luxurious experience is only amplified by an ultra-luxe interior, complete with stunning white marble and warm wood touches.
One thing to note about hammams is that they are not saunas. The two may be relatives, but the hammam experience is one of many steps, each more relaxing than the last. At Soho House, a renowned Cowshed therapist sets you up with towels and a refreshment in a warm transition space prior to the hammam. The serene marble room stands as the backdrop to your hammam experience, where a full-body cleansing will quite literally leave you on cloud nine. Full disclaimer: you may never want to leave. Cowshed Spa offers packages that include a post-hammam massage, which seems like a no-brainer to us. This is rejuvenation at its most fun.
