One small sticker sheet is included in the set, and most of them are fairly easy to apply.
The set comes with a lone minifigure, Lucius Malfoy who has made plenty of other appearances recently. He shares the same torso as the Lucius from 75978 Diagon Alley and a variety of LEGO books, but his legs are plain which is a bit of a letdown.
That said, this version of Lucius is still relatively rare especially if you don’t own 75978 Diagon Alley, so it’s a nice little bonus to LEGO Harry Potter fans eager to add a Lucius to their collection.
Here’s a look at Lucius’ back printing.
And here is a completed set, which contains a small part of the Borgin and Burkes dark wizard antique shop, as well as a Floo Network chimney, which ties in to 76437 The Burrow Collectors Edition which also shares the same Floo Network play feature.
The scene that this GWP set is based on is a nod to the deleted scene fromChamber of Secrets, where Harry accidentally ends up in Borgin and Burkes, and spies Lucius (and Malfoy) popping in to hide some Dark Wizard artifacts from prying Ministry of Magic eyes.
Here’s a look at the Borgin and Burkes shelf/counter which has a small selection of interesting artifacts, as well as plenty of LEGO skeleton skulls!
There’s a galleon tile included which is always nice to have.
The main attraction and play feature is the Floo Network chimney, which is intended to work with the Floo Network chimney that’s built into The Burrow, so you can send minifigures from The Burrow to Borgin and Burkes and back.
You place the minifigure on a little platform in the chimney, and twist a knob at the top to raise or lower the minifigure into the chimney shaft.
The function works very smoothly thanks to these worm gears, which come have been recoloured to green for the first time ever (also shows up in The Burrow) to match the Floo Network’s magical green effects.
Here’s a video of the LEGO Floo Network in action!
And here’s the back of the chimney, and a closer look at the Borgin and Burkes stickered signboard.
For a more compact display, you can also connect the chimney to the store shelves which is a bit easier to display.
What I liked:
- Fun play feature that ties in well with The Burrow
- Another chance to get a Lucius Malfoy minifigure
- GWP redemption is for all LEGO Harry Potter sets, and not the big expensive launch set
What I didn’t like:
- No leg printing on Lucius
- Should’ve come with a Mr Borgin minifigure
Final Thoughts:
40695 Borgin and Burkes: Floo Network is a pretty decent LEGO Harry Potter GWP (gift with purchase) that features an accessible purchase threshold, making this a relatively easy bonus to score if you have any HP sets on your wishlist.
The fact that this set isn’t gated to purchases of 76437 The Burrow Collectors Edition and you only need to spend US$130 / AU$215 / £120/ €130 on Harry Potter sets makes this a very achievable and fair reward.
The set itself isn’t super remarkable outside of the Floo Network connectivity to The Burrow set. The Lucius Malfoy minifigure is a nice bonus, especially for fans who don’t own him, but the lack of leg printing when many of the cheaper magazine versions had it feels a little odd.
The set also feels fairly incomplete, as it could’ve been an opportunity to include Mr. Borgin in a relatively accessible set, and pad it up with a bit more value.
That said, at the end of the day, it’s a pretty nice bonus for LEGO Harry Potter fans looking to celebrate September’s Return to Hogwarts, and for those picking up 76437 The Burrow Collectors Edition, a fun little reward for your hard-earned spend.
