Where can I find the Blackmagic disk Test Utility?
Thu Sep 14, 2023 11:55 am
Hello, everyone!
I'm trying to locate the Blackmagic "Disk Speed Test" utility, however, all I can find is the Blackmagic RAW Speed Test that gives me fps information rather than the desired MB/s (Write/Read). Has this utility been discontinued? Note: I'm using Windows 10.
Thanks in advance for any forthcoming replies.
Martina

If it is not in the Blackmagic folder in the Windows Start menu......

Hi Charles,
Thank you for your prompt reply. I did check both locations as outlined in your response, but can only find the Blackmagic RAW Speed Test. I wonder if perhaps I de-selected the Disk Speed utility during the initial install? I did recently upgrade to DR18.5 but it's still missing. Do you know if there is a way to reinstall that particular utility?
Thank you!

It is part of the Decklink/UltraStudio drivers installation and not Resolve.

Interesting, as I have neither Decklink or Ultrastudio.
Anyway, Martina, I have put a copy of the folder from the location in my previous post on Dropbox. See if that works.

Hi,
Will this .exe file also work on the Mac? Thanks, Sanjay

You have the Desktop Video installed. That is the Decklink and UltraStudio drivers.
@sanjayt
No, .exe is a Windows executable. You need to download and install the Mac version.

Blackmagic Disk Speed Test is installed when you install the Desktop Video software.
For Mac, it's also available on the Apple Mac App Store. So for Mac, you can install it from there, without having to install Desktop Video.
But for Windows and Linux, you need to install Desktop Video to get the Disk Speed Test app.
No harm with installing Desktop Video if you don't have any BMD I/O hardware on the system.

Charles, first off, my apologies for the delay in response. I have not received any email notification advising me of further replies to my post. Anyhow, thank you so much for sharing the files via Dropbox. I tried downloading them the other day, but for some reason couldn't download all of them. I just tried again and voila, this time they all downloaded properly and I was already able to install and use the Speed Test Utility. You rock! Thanks again for your time and help- much appreciated! Martina

Dwaine, just to clarify- when you say "Desktop Video" you mean that DaVinci Resolve has been downloaded and installed on my PC hard drive? If that's the case- yes, I have the latest version of Resolve installed on both my PC and laptop, but the Disk Speed Test Utility is missing on both systems. Thanks to Charles though, I now have access to it via the files he provided on Dropbox.

It used to be be available as stand alone but not anymore. Now you have to install a useless software called Desktop Video in order to get the Disk Speed Test utility! Why? Nobody knows! Since I do not want to install a bloatware that I do not need, Desktop Video, I already substituted BMD Disk Speed Test with AJA Speed Test utility which is free, better and available to download stand alone.

How did you install it without installer? Maybe you mean you run it directly from the folder, without installing it!

That’s what I did for my laptops. Copied the folder w/ the Disk Speed Test files and can run the .exe fine w/o having to do the Desktop Video install.

I see ... you did not install Disk Speed Test, you are just running it directly from the DiskSpeedTest.exe file without installing it and that is OK but since it is not installed, you will not find it among the installed apps in Windows.

That's quite alright. I simply moved the files to the Blackmagic Folder on my C drive and created a shortcut on my Taskbar. Works like a charm.

@Charles Bennett ... thank you SOOO much for that still working DropBox link!! I've been having concerns with Resolve Studio 19 and some quirks I was seeing -- performance wise.
I am a DaVinci Resolve newbie but a retired Senior S/W Engineer and was worried if my new Windows h/w was up to snuff (or not), as they say.
Having just run this app (thanks to you!), the results make me feel pretty good about the disk drive subsystem.. I'll check that part of my system as OK.
Cheers from Los Angeles

I would just note that the version Charles has posted is from a few years ago, and is version 3.4
The current version packaged with Desktop Video 14.2 is 3.4.2. Doesn't appear to be much difference now, but someday there may be changes that might matter to someone.
